I think it would be kinda cool to broaden the available smilies here. If you want a reference, check out my site. We've got quite a collection and they're used quite frequently. It helps to be able to express yourself so when sometimes you say something that could be taken the wrong way, you just add the appropriate smilie and it clears things up.

Putting smilies in is kind of a chore so I'm not going to add a ton of them at the moment. How about if you pick your top 10 or so favorites and send them to me in a zip/rar? One other thing that just came to mind: does anyone know if emoticons are covered by copyright law? It would suck to be sued because I used someone else's smileys. I tried googling around and didn't find any answers.

I would say no only because they are freeware on the web meaning anyone can use them. Whether you hotlink to them or include them in your site makes no difference as far as I know. So long as you're not making any money from the use of the smilies. If you were turning any kind of a profit on your site and the smilies were part of it they may be an issue. Outside of that I would say no. I've had all my smilies on my site for almost 2 years now and never had an issue.

This is all just my thinking and experience on the subject. I don't know the actual legality of it though. I would think that the site where you get the smilies from (wherever that may be) would have to have a copyright disclaimer posted if they copyrighted their smilies.
